Shakuhachi and Winter Solstice

I attend the Tacheria School of Spiritual Direction in Tucson, AZ.  We meet once a month for two years and are gifted by meeting spiritual teachers from around the world who teach us about their faith, religion, spirituality or universal connection, how they practice and daily methods they use to connect with their version of God/Goddess in their lives.  We have had the chance to learn about Christainity, Buddhism, the Muslim tradition, Interfaith studies, Shamanism, the connection of God in recovery from addictions,  Grief counseling and stages of Grieving, Spirituality and Environmental Studies.  It has been a great experience although not without its ups and downs.

This past weekend I had the honor of meeting Dr. Robert Jonas of  the Empty Bell program …  which is a contemplative meditation group using Buddhist tradition of meditation of Christian scriptures.  He has become active in land conservation where he resides in Massachusetts.  He is trained in the Zen art of playing the Shakuhachi Japaneses flute.

Of course, while he was playing one of his pieces, the faeries, especially Button, said, “Shannon, Shannon, please, oh please, ask Jonas if we can play drum with him and the beautiful flute.”  I said, “Button … he is a guest speaker and is quite busy … I don’t know about that.”  However, by the end of our day long class Button and the other members of the SDFDC (Sonoran Desert Faerie Dust Clan) had worn me down enough that I mustered up the courage to ask Jonas if we could drum with him.   Jonas, thank goodness, readily agreed and we had a mini jam session.  All the while Button kept saying, “Told you so.” (hmmm … thank you Button!)

For this I am grateful and appreciate “Jonas”‘ (as he likes to be called) with our class.
