Phenomenal Women February 8, 2011

A client of mine shared a story with me today about a woman named Morjorie Newlin.  She was a retired nurse and at the age of 72 her health had begun to deteriorate.  She went to the grocery store to buy a large bag of kitty food and could barely lift it.  Deciding she didn’t want to rely on others to help her with strength she began going to train at a gym.      After 13 years, she was a succesfully competing bodybuilder until the age of 86.   I have many elderly clients and want them to know that age is a state of mind.  It is challenging to “see” our physical appearance change as we age but I have seen those older adults well in their 90’s seem as child-like as in there 20’s due to their outlook.

I thought Maya Angelou’s Poem, “Phenomenal Woman” would illustrate Morjorie Newlin’s story of youth even in the face of “aging”.

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
‘Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Maya Angelou

Is that photo for real? That’s an 86 year old woman? She looks about 35.

Nancy … photo is real … not sure exact age in that particular photo but had to be after the age of 72… that is when she started training. …. yes exercise and mental youth … important 🙂

I could say my children but that would only be partially true. I could say my husband who is my sense of humour, but once again that wouldn’t be the whole truth. I will say it is me. I am what keeps me “young”. My ability to laugh at myself and to not take life too seriously. By being myself and seeing the world for it’s possibilities, I stay young. By living my life according to my rules, I stay young. By singing as loudly as I want (most times off key!), I stay young. By smiling or crying when the mood suits me, I stay young.

    I am a Phenomenal Woman.

Thank you Shannon for the reminder. 😉

Wow! What a wonderful poem! I saw a video of Maya Angelou (oops…hmm, I think it was her) reciting her poem “Still I Rise.” Search for it on YouTube, it’s phenomenal. I would like to see her read this one too.

    Thank you Shannon!

Thanks julia … I had the pleasure of meeting her ten years ago. She was the speaker presenting for arizonas teacher of the year and my dad was the award recipient … she is soooooo tall and elegant 🙂

  7. nrhatch Says:

I just watched some videos of her on TV at age 86. She looked fab. She died at age 87.

  8. faeriemagic Says:

That is so awesome … the client who told me about her is an older gentleman but admires her strength and youthfulness
